The Hungering Shadow

Some mornings feel colder than the thermostat admits.

Algonquian tradition didn't invent the wendigo to frighten children with monsters. It invented it to warn grown men what winter, isolation, and hunger can turn a person into. The wendigo was human once. Whatever choice it made in the snow, it never stopped paying for it.

Some hungers were never meant to be satisfied. It moves through blizzard and dead timber with a gait too long for its legs, always thinner than the last time anyone saw it, no matter how much it's taken. The cold doesn't kill the wendigo. The cold is what it's made of.

There's no version of this story where it eats enough and stops. That's the actual warning underneath the legend: some debts don't close, they just compound, season after season, until there's nothing left of the person who made the first bad choice.
